It all started when I was in the third grade…
My best friend and I swapped the competitive games of tag and four square at recess for something no other 9-year-old would be caught dead doing: Picking up trash. (Yeah, we were weird.)
As I picked up trash over the years, I began to wonder if there was a way to reverse-engineer the whole thing. A way to completely eliminate the incessant trash that fills our streets, dumpsters, and landfills.
So, I started researching it…
And as I got further and further into the rabbit hole of Google, I began learning words like “compost” and “zero waste” and “carbon neutral.” I even came across people who kept an entire year’s worth of waste in a single mason jar.
Needless to say, I was hooked.
I started making small changes…like buying a bar of soap instead of another plastic container filled with soap. I swapped my pre-packaged fruits and veggies for loose ones without the plastic. And I began going to refill shops to “refill” jars of dish soap, laundry detergent, and all-purpose cleaner.
Living like this—in a way that honored the earth—became something that I looked forward to every single day. It was the one thing in my life that I had complete control over. And the best part: I knew I was impacting the world in a positive way. And I felt darn good doing it.
That’s when I decided to start this blog—so that I could keep myself accountable in learning everything I possibly could about sustainability, zero waste, and product swaps; and sharing my journey along the way.
If you’re here reading this, maybe you had a similar experience, or maybe it was wildly different. But you’re here. And I think that’s pretty cool. So make yourself at home and stay awhile…
